9 quent by 1960. We present two examples from June 1958 of these undubbed instrumental backing tracks to give the listener a sense of what Fats sang along with when he put on his headphones in the studio. We thank Fats biographer Rick Coleman for finding these tapes and making them available to us. They appear on Disc 9, Tracks 23 and 24. T H E S E S S I O N M A N Prior to his days as a major star, Fats occasionally appeared as a session pianist for other artists. We present seven examples of this work on Disc 9, Tracks 25-31. T H E A L T E R N A T E M A N Fifteen alternate takes of issued performances are presented on Disc 10, Tracks 1-15 in chronological order of recording date. T H E O V E R D U B B E D M A N In July 1963, a number of Fats' original performances were over- dubbed with a female chorus for release after he had left I MPERIAL . We present six examples of these on Disc 10, Tracks 17-22. We also include La La , an unusual case in which a string overdub was recorded but never issued by the label. The undubbed version of La La appeared on LP 9208 but the overdubbed version we present on Disc 10, Track 16 had been presumed lost. T H E I M I T A T E D M A N Other artists copied Fats' distinctive style in an attempt to cap- italize on his success. On Disc 10, Tracks 23-28 we present examples of this by six different artists. T H E A B C M A N All of Fats' post-I MPERIAL recordings for ABC P ARAMOUNT are pre- sented in chronological order of recording date on Discs 11 and 12.
