Bear Family lieben ihre thematischen Zusammenstellungen und hier ist eine weitere, diesmal mit 29 Wetterliedern, insbesondere aus der zweiten Jahreshälfte vor dem Winter. Die Einführung des Heftes ist fast schon eine Rezension an sich: "Willkommen in der Herbstlandschaft. Wir möchten, dass Sie mit uns in die Welt der fallenden Blätter, der bunten Wälder, des Regens und der Gewitter, der Wärme des indischen Sommers und natürlich der Melancholie des Herbstmeersohnes entfliehen!
Unterwegs treffen wir uns mit Außendienstmitarbeitern, Mozart und Truthähnen, um Thanksgiving und die Zeit von September bis November auf nostalgische Weise zu feiern. Aber keine Sorge, Halloween ist nicht inklusive!" Die "Truthahn"-Referenz ist sehr passend, da es hier einen Haufen davon gibt, von Schwulenjäger und Don Duke (eine Aufnahme der Botschaft!!!!!) über Bobby Vinton bis hin zu Mark Wynter!!!!!!! Dann gibt es noch einen Haufen orchestrales / Big Band / jazziges Zeug - Ferrante & Teicher, Harry James, Bobby Christian, Les Brown etc. - sowie einen großen Klumpen reiner Anfang der 60er Jahre Flocken aus The Tempos, Bobby Darin's Orchestra, The Viscounts, The Flares (nicht THE Flares) und so weiter. Ein Hauch von Country / Bluegrass / Western-Swing, auch von Chet Atkins, Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs und Milton Brown & His Musical Brownies. Dazu ein Neuheitenstück von Red Ingle und stilvolle Popartikel von Etta James, Irma Thomas und Dinah Washington.
Aber das ist ein Rock n Roll Magazin, also gibt es hier auch Rock n Roll? Sehr wenig, fürchte ich. Die Coasters sind alles andere als Rock n Roll mit einem Track von ihrer schwächsten LP ('One By One'), während Eddie Cochrans'Cot-ton Picker' bei weitem nicht das Beste ist. Bleiben noch Mac Rebennacks Did-dleyesque'Storm War-ning' und der weniger überwältigende'Turkey Gob-bler' vom Zugpuffer Nino Tempo. Oh, und Fans von Johnny Bach & The Moonshine Boozers können Memphis Minnie's Originalversion von'What's The Matter With The Mill' von 1930 hören! Dies ist eine sehr seltsame Sammlung. Viel zu musikalisch vielfältig, um mein Boot zu schweben. Das ist sicher.

Bear Family love their 'themed' compilations and here's another one, this time featuring 29 'weather' songs; in partic-ular from the latter part of the year that precedes winter. The booklet's intro-duction is almost a review in itself: "Welcome to the scenery of autumn. We'd like you to escape with us into the world of falling leaves, colourful woods, rain and thunderstorms, the warmth of the Indian sum-mer, and of course the melancholy of the fall sea-son!
On the way we will meet field workers, Mozart and turkeys to celebrate Thanksgiving and the period from September to November in a nostalgic way. But don't worry, Halloween is not included!" The 'turkey' reference is very apt, as there's a bunch of them here, from Fag Hunter and Don Duke (an Embassy recording!!!) to Bobby Vinton and even Mark Wynter!!! Then there's a heap of orchestral / big band / jazzy stuff -Ferrante & Teicher, Harry James, Bobby Christian, Les Brown etc. - as well as a big dollop of pure early '60s fluff from The Tempos, Bobby Darin's Orchestra, The Viscounts, The Flares (not THE Flares) and so forth. A dash of country / bluegrass / western swing, too, from Chet Atkins, Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs and Milton Brown & His Musical Brownies. Plus a novelty piece from Red Ingle and classy pop items from Etta James, Irma Thomas and Dinah Washington.
But this is a rock n roll mag, so is there any rock n roll here? Very little, I'm afraid. The Coasters are anything but rock n roll with a track from their weakest LP ('One By One'), while Eddie Cochran's 'Cot-ton Picker' is far from his finest. That leaves Mac Rebennack's Did-dleyesque 'Storm War-ning' and the less con-vincing 'Turkey Gob-bler' by bandwagon jumper Nino Tempo. Oh, and fans of Johnny Bach & The Moonshine Boozers can get to hear Memphis Minnie's orig-inal version of 'What's The Matter With The Mill' from 1930! This is a very weird collection. Way too musically diverse to float my boat. that's for sure.
