Bear Family bracht vorige zomers de zomer-CD’s Banana Split For My Baby (BCD17513) en Another Banana Split Please (BCD17601) uit en dit is het derde deel dat een andere titel en een andere cover kreeg. De thematische inhoud blijft dezelfde: 33 hot sunny gems for your summer holidays. Muzikaal wordt dat ingevuld met vooral rock 'n' roll uit diverse goede vaatjes van het aanbevelenswaardige voor-elk-wat-wils principe zoals Derrell Felts' It's a Great Big Day (opgenomen in 1959 door Norman Petty met The Crickets als begeleiders), Toni Dee's June July And August, The Four Mints' Night Air, ex-Louis Prima zangeres Lilyann Carol's Soda Pop, Joey Welz' gitaar-/piano-instro Shore Party, King Curtis' gitaar-/sax-/orgel-instro Beach Party, Joe Jones' originele California Sun en Jerry Lee Lewis' Sun rocker Milkshake Mademoiselle. Tot die rock 'n' roll rekenen we ook doo-wop in alle soorten en maten van The Dovells (Summer Job), The Del Vikings (The Sun), Gerald Sims & the Daylighters (Cool Breeze), The Videls (Now That Summer Is Here), The Charades (Surf 'n' Stomp) en The Sh-Booms alias The Chords (Short Skirts).
The Andrews Sisters (Her Bathing Suit Never Got Wet). Bear Family released the summer CDs Banana Split For My Baby (BCD17513) and Another Banana Split Please (BCD17601) last summer and this is the third part that got another title and another cover. The thematic content remains the same: 33 hot sunny gems for your summer holidays. Musically it is filled in with rock 'n' roll from various good kegs of the recommendable for every-what-will principle like Derrell Felts' It's a Great Big Day (recorded in 1959 by Norman Petty with The Crickets as accompaniment), Toni Dee's June July and August, The Four Mints' Night Air, ex-Louis Prima singer Lilyann Carol's Soda Pop, Joey Welz' guitar/piano-instro Shore Party, King Curtis' guitar/sax/organ-instro Beach Party, Joe Jones' original California Sun and Jerry Lee Lewis' Sun rocker Milkshake Mademoiselle.
That rock 'n' roll also includes doo-wop in all shapes and sizes from The Dovells (Summer Job), The Del Vikings (The Sun), Gerald Sims & the Daylighters (Cool Breeze), The Videls (Now That Summer Is Here), The Charades (Surf 'n' Stomp) and The Sh-Booms alias The Chords (Short Skirts). The better teen rock is represented by Annette Funicello (Bikini Beach Party), Jimmy Daley alias Kip Tyler (the miles of Jungle Hop and She's My Witch removed Summer Love), Don Carroll (the by Jerry Reed pinched Seven-Up And Ice Cream Soda), Andrea Carroll (Please Don't Talk To The Lifeguard), Lorrae Desmond (Soda Pop Hop) and Dick Glasser alias Dick Lory alias the singer on Pee Wee King's Ballroom Baby and Catty Town with the stroll Jeannie's Bikini that looks like a sister of Bony Moronie. Pee Wee Crayton rocks the blues in Rockin' The Blues, just like Gene & Billy who know about the heat in It's Hot. No summer without a beach, no beach without surf and no surf without the bare-shaven Pyramids with the guitar/sax instro Bikini Drag. The prize for the weirdest contribution goes to the (for the teen market cleared?) non-alcoholic vocal swingbilly performance of Drinkin' Wine Spo Dee O Dee entitled Drinkin' Pop Sodee Odee (Pop Pop Pop) with Donny Baker & the Dimensionals as dry bags.
The obligatory string ballads (Debbie Reynolds' Summer Romance and Richard Barrett & the Chantels' Summer's Love) and crooners (Mel Tormé's Moonlight Cocktail) will of course also be present at the beach party, just like swing (Dean Martin's In The Cool Cool Of The Evening) and vocal harmony swing (Evelyn Knight & the Stardusters with Powder Your Face With Sunshine, also known by Dean Martin). Also In The Good Old Summertime by The Kirby Stone Four is vocal harmony while they did record rock 'n' roll like their version of the song Kids from the movie Bye Bye Birdie.
Bear Family's Seasons series not only includes, as you know, rock 'n' roll and relatives, but invariably goes both wider and earlier, which means that In The Summertime runs from 1946 to 1964 and also mamboot and cha cha chat with Edmundo Ros (Summertime) and The Andrews Sisters (Her Bathing Suit Never Got Wet). You won't hear me complain about that, because I can't get enough of this kind of collectors full of (re)discovering lesser known but quality songs in excellent sound quality for the time being. Pussy weather again? On this CD the sun is shining! As always with the German re-issue world champion there is a neat 24 page full color booklet with photos, retro-illustrations and track by track info. Info: www.bear-family.com (Frantic Franky)
