Der Weg von seinen Anfängen in den 1950er Jahren und seiner Faszination für das Spiel von T-Bone Walker über seine Zusammenarbeit mit Frank Zappa, Albert Collins, Johnny Copeland, Little Richard, Bo Diddley und Etta James bis hin zu einem der Symbole des Funk war jedoch ereignisreich.
Zappa schrieb, dass der Hit „Three Hours Past Midnight“ aus dem Jahr 1965 ihn dazu inspirierte, zur Gitarre zu greifen. However, the road from his beginnings in the 1950s and his fascination with T-Bone Walker's playing, through his collaborations with Frank Zappa, Albert Collins, Johnny Copeland, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Etta James, to becoming one of the symbols of funk was eventful.
Zappa wrote that the 1965 hit Three Hours Past Midnight inspired him to pick up the guitar. Jimmie Vaughan (Freddie, Albert & B.B.) and Sly Stone were among his greatest inspirations. The next album in the “ROCKS” series contains 30 songs that Johnny Guitar Watson recorded between 1952 and 1964, i.e. in the early stages of his career. It includes his first hit, Motor Head Baby, from 1952, which was still credited to saxophonist Chuck Higgins and his band The Mellotones, with Watson as pianist and singer. Then there is the instrumental Spoon Guitar, recorded two years later; there is Gangster Of Love from 1957, which inspired Stevie Miller to write Joker; the later songs Sweet Lovin Mama and Jockey Guitar, played in many ways, as well as the beautifully performed Lesing Back, dated 1961. This is a song that John Mayall made very popular in Europe a few years later, even using it as the title of one of his albums. All in all, it contains a rich portion of pure rhythm and blues and is an undeniably powerful and inspiring piece.
