The Cole Slaw Club is a Hamburg based rhythm and blues consortium of DJs, dance clubs, and fans. L. Their tastes run to jump blues, pop-a corn, and soul records. This bare bones sampler, which comes with t no booklet or original release info, shows what it's all about. There are plenty of upbeat, danceable tunes, including Louis Prima's knocking "Shadrack," Jimmy Oliver's Or-chestra's spooktacular instro "The Sneak," and Screamin' Jay Hawkins' defiant "Talk About Me." The Car-roll Brothers' "Salome Twist" has an exotica feel to it. Pat Miller's "Dance of the Gooney Bird" is way odd and way cool. Other highlights include Little Mary Allen's growling "Humdinger," Miss Lavell's plenty soulful "Stolen Love," and Eddie Banks' "Fever" an song "Sugar Diabetes." Seldom heard tunes from R&B stars Louis Richard Berry, and Vernon jgrredeanne also provide a few surprises. This music stands on its own, the Cole Slaw Club connection notwith-standing. Methinks these people are on to something. (Dave Gnerre)
