Boothroyds Beschäftigung mit Oldtime-, Country- und Bluegrass-Musik begann in Melbourne in den späten 1960er Jahren während des Folk-Revivals. Er bildete mit seiner späteren Frau Juanita Hillman ein Duo, das Songs von Künstlern wie der Carter Family, New Lost City Ramblers, Doe Watson, den Delmore Brothers und den Country Gentlemen aufführte.
Sie lebten auch ein Jahr lang in England und traten in Folk-Clubs in und um London auf. Er spielte Clawhammer-Banjo, und sie spielten beide Gitarre. Juanita starb im Jahr 2001, und John trat weiterhin auf, hauptsächlich als Solist.
