King Curtis war DER Saxophonist des Rhythm’n’Blues der späten
Fünfziger- und frühen Sechzigerjahre. Wenn man ihn für eine
bestimmte Aufnahmesession nicht bekommen konnte, so sagte
man die komplette Session einfach ab. King Curtis machte eine
Reihe von geschätzten Soloaufnahmen; die gesuchtesten davon
blieben seine Capitol -Aufnahmen aus den frühen 60er Jahren.
Er konnte einige große Hits wie ‘Soul Twist’ und den absoluten
Soul-Klassiker, ‘Soul Serenade’, landen. Diese Titel sind ebenso
dabei wie all die anderen Singles, die vier Original-LPs und
sechzehn nie zuvor veröffentlichte Aufnahmen. Die Wurzeln
seiner zu Recht gepriesenen späteren LPs für Atlantic sind in
Songs wie ‘Memphis’, ‘Watermelon Man’, ‘Night Train’,
‘Something You Got’ und seinen Sam Cooke gewidmeten Songs
deutlich zu hören. / 3-CD box (LP-size) with 24-page book, 71
tracks. - King Curtis was THE R&B sax player in the late ‘50s and
early ‘60s. They’d cancel sessions if they couldn’t get him. He
made some highly regarded solo recordings too, and the rarest
have always been the Capitol sides from the early ‘60s. There
were some big hits, like ‘Soul Twist’ and the classic ‘Soul
Serenade’, and they’re here of course, together with all the other
singles, the four original LPs, and 16 previously unissued cuts.
The roots of his justly acclaimed Atlantic LPs can be heard in
songs like ‘Memphis’, ‘Watermelon Man’, ‘Night Train’,
‘Something You Got’, and in his Sam Cooke tributes.
