schon was Besonderes. Als mir Fred Kaplan vor ein paar
Jahren ein Demotape von ihm schickte, war ich
überrascht. Selten hatte ich einen weißen Countrymusiker
gehört, der so authentisch dieMusik der 1920er und 30er
Jahre wieder beleben konnte. Er klingt, damals wie heute,
absolut unverfälscht. Zum Glück spielt er keine Klassiker
nach,sondernschreibt-teilszusammenmitseinemBruder
- eigene Blues. Dies ist zwar weder zeitgemäß noch sonst
irgendwie modern, doch beeindruckend — This guy is
something special. He was born in 1950 and remained
literally unknown until the day of this, his first commercial

1964 ihre erste Bluesscheibe für Prestige aufnahm (mit
Charlie Musselwhite an der Harmonica), wollte mal
wieder ein richtiges Bluesalbum aufnehmen mit
handverlesenen Songs und in neuem Gewand, das
gleichzeitig den Original Rechnung tragen sollte. Kurzum:
ich finde, es ist ihr gelungen. ‘Victim oft he Blues’ ist ein
großartigesAlbum,dasvonTracysexpressiverStimmeund
der exzellenten Begleitarbeit, vor allem von Mike
Henderson, lebt. Mit einem leichten Gospeleinschlag
erinnert diese Produktion an die neueren Produktionen
von Mavis Staples, und das ist doch nicht schlecht, oder
Unbedingt zu empfehlen— She hadmade her first album,
a blues record in 1964 for Prestige (feat. C. Musselwhite).
After all these years she wanted to do another real blues
album with hand-picked songs and new arrangements.
This is a great album, thanks to Tracy’s expressive vocal
style, and the superb backing. Mike Henderson deserves
extra credits. With its gospel-drenched style this set is
reminding me of Mavis Staples most recent releases. Not
