Geboren am 16. August 1915 in Little Rock, Arkansis, wurde er als Sänger mit den Bands von Dub Jenkins, Jay McShann und, von 1943-51, Herzog Ellington bekannt, der Hibblers ungewöhnlich verzerrten Stil als "tonale Pantomime" beschrieb.

Nachdem R&B mit Bäumen" (1948 auf Miracle), Danny Boy" (1951 auf Atlantic) und What Will I Tell My Heart" (1951 auf Chess) auftrat, wechselte Hibbler zum populären Balladesport und blieb bis Mitte der fünfziger Jahre mit Top Thirty-Hits wie Unchained Melody" in den Pop-Charts - aus dem Film Unchained - He" und After The Lights o Down", alle auf Decca. Er nahm auch für Verve, Columbia, Argo und Score auf.
