Über den gesamten Zeitraum seiner Karriere als Bandleader, vom Ende der 1950er Jahre bis zu seinem frühen Tod am 21. Juni 1980, war Bert Kaempfert zwei berühmten Schallplattenlabels treu: der deutschen Polydor und dem amerikanischen Decca-Label. Nachdem in der Vergangenheit der Polydor-Katalog Kaempferts in verschiedenen CD-Editionen wiederveröffentlicht wurde und alte und neue Fans begeisterte, wirft zu seinem 100. Geburtstag eine 24-CD-Box weltweit erstmals ein Schlaglicht auf seine in den USA erschienenen Decca-Alben. Obwohl sich das Repertoire von Kaempferts Decca- und Polydor-Alben überschneidet, ist diese Sammlung der amerikanischen Alben von 1958 bis 1970 eine Schatztruhe der wichtigsten Aufnahmen Kaempferts durch eine ganz neue Brille betrachtet.

Mit The Bert Kaempfert Decca Collection kann man sich nicht nur erstklassigem Musikgenuss hingeben, sondern auch die Tatsache nacherleben, nämlich dass Bert Kaempferts Erfolgsgeschichte weitestgehend auf seinen amerikanischen Hits basierte. Zwar nahm Bert Kaempfert all seine Alben in Hamburg auf, als deutscher Exportschlager in die USA charteten seine Songs aber stets zuerst dort und kamen erst dann als Nachwirkung nach Deutschland zurück. Das gab es vorher nie, und auch seitdem nie wieder: ein deutscher Musiker wurde mit swingender Orchestermusik und Songs mit internationalem Niveau einer der ganz Großen in den USA.

Hamburger Orchesterchef, Arrangeur und Komponist wurde am 16.10.1923 in Hamburg geboren und war vor James Last der erfolgreichste deutsche Komponist und Orchesterchef nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg. Seine Laufbahn begann er als Saxophonist im Orchester beim Danziger Radio-Orchester Hans Busch.

Nach dem Krieg tingelte Bert Kaempfert durch englische Soldatenclubs in Norddeutschland. Seine ersten Hits als Produzent und Arrangeur hatte er mit „Die Gitarre und das Meer' (Freddy, 1959) und „Morgen' (Ivo Robic, 1959). 1960 folgten sein eigener Welthit „Wunderland bei Nacht', mit dem er in den USA zu Ruhm, Erfolg und Goldenen Schallplatten kam. „Afrikaan Beat' (1962), „A swingin' Safari' und „Red Roses for a blue Lady' waren nicht minder erfolgreich. Als Komponist zeichnete er für die Tophits „Spanish Eyes' (Al Martino, 1966) und „Strangers in the Night' (Frank Sinatra, 1966) verantwortlich. Seine aber wohl größte Chance verpaßte Bert Kaempfert 1962. Da produzierte er nämlich „My Bonnie' mit dem englischen Sänger Tony Sheridan.

Als Begleitband engagierte Bert Kaempfert damals die noch unbekannten und einen Plattenvertrag suchenden Beatles. Als „Beat Brothers' spielten sie auf der Platte mit. Mehr als eine LP entstand nicht bei dieser kurzen Zusammenarbeit - sie ist heute als „Beatles in Hamburg' auf dem Markt und verhalf den Beatles damals zu einem Plattenvertrag.
