Der New Yorker Larry Finneran schrieb Dear One mit seinem Bruder Vinnie und schickte das Demo zu Hy Weiss's Old Town Records, obwohl Old Town nicht wirklich auf diesen Sound spezialisiert war. Weiss veröffentlichte es jedoch unter dem Namen'Larry Finnegan', und am Tag seiner Veröffentlichung, dem 24. Februar 1962, produzierte Shelby Singleton eine Coverversion mit seinem neuen Unterzeichner Darrell McCall.
Finnegans Geschichte ist auf Bear Family ('Dear One', BCD 16275) ebenso verfügbar wie die Darrell McCall Geschichte ('The Real McCall', BCD15846). Kurz gesagt, Darrell wurde am 30. April 1940 in New Jasper, Ohio, geboren, wuchs mit Liebe zur Country-Musik auf und kam nach Nashville. Er sang Backup auf Sessions und unterwegs und machte seine ersten Aufnahmen als "Cover"-Künstler für Starday. Manager Hubert Long landete 1961 einen Vertrag mit Capitol und einen weiteren mit Philips (dem europäischen Unternehmen, das gerade Mercury gekauft hatte). "Hubert versuchte, mich in eine Pop-Sänger-Ader zu versetzen", sagte Darrell zu Rich Kienzle. "Dieser Junge, Larry Finnegan, hatte "Liebster" draußen.
Hubert sagte:'Ich denke, du kannst diesen Song machen und wir werden ihn in die Pop-Charts reiten und ihn an die Spitze des Landes bringen.'" So ist es natürlich nicht passiert. Finnegan gewann den Tag (er zog schließlich nach Schweden, gründete Svensk-American Records und starb 1973), während Darrell ein Geselle wurde. Sein Durchbruch, A Stranger Was Here, kam 1963.
