Die Pilgrim Travelers - zusammen mit den Soul Stirrers und den Five Blind Boys of Mississippi - waren das fleißigste, bestgekleidete, am weitesten gereiste und meist aufgenommene Männerquartett auf dem Gospel Highway. Während eines intensiven Zeitraums von acht Jahren (ca. 1947-1954) behielten sie das gleiche Personal und bauten eine nationale Karriere auf. Mit ihren prächtigen Stimmen, ihren kunstvollen Arrangements und ihrer herausragenden Showkunst erlangte die Gruppe Ruhm und Anerkennung, indem sie mit einer in der Gospelgeschichte kaum zu hörenden Leidenschaft und Kraft sang. Sie waren das erste Quartett, das 1953 im New Yorker Apollo Theater auftrat. Sänger, Taent Scout und A&R-Mann bei Specialty Records, J.W. Alexander, der später der Mentor von Same Cooke wurde, beschrieb den Leadsänger der Pilgrim Travelers, Kylo Turner: Er hatte das Aussehen, er hatte die Stimme, er hatte alles.
