Southside Johnny alias John Lyon stammt wie der Boss (Bruce Springsteen) aus New Jersey und natürlich kreuzten sich die Wege der beiden bzw. der Mitglieder der E-Street Band oft. Insbesondere zu Steven Van Zandt, alias Little Steven, besteht eine langjährige Freundschaft, der auch die ersten drei Alben von Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes produzierte, die sehr vom Rhythm and Blues beeinflusst waren: „I Don't Want to Go Home“ (1976), ‚This Time It's for Real‘ (1977) und ‚Hearts of Stone‘ (1978).

Ihr erstes Deutschlandkonzert gab die Band 1977 im Hamburger „Onkel Pö“. Im Oktober 1979 traten sie in der Essener Grugahalle bei der 5. Rockpalast Nacht zusammen mit Mitch Ryder und Nils Lofgren auf. Der WDR war für den Rockpalast vor Ort und zeichnete die Veranstaltung auf. Am 26. März 1992 gaben Southside Johnny & the Asbury Dukes ein zweites Konzert für den Rockpalast in der Live Music Hall in Köln. An diesem Abend trat Little Steven für vier Stücke als Gast auf der Bühne auf. Diese beiden Konzerte sind jetzt auf DVD erhältlich.6. März 1992 gaben Southside Johnny & The Asbury Dukes in der Kölner Live Music Hall ein zweites Konzert für den Rockpalast, für vier Stücke kam an diesem Abend Little Steven als Gast auf die Bühne. Jetzt gibt es diese beiden Konzerte in einer umfassenden Box mit CDs und DVDs käuflich zu erwerben.
