Der in Mississippi geborene Otis Spann, der weithin als der führende Chicagoer Blues-Pianist der Nachkriegszeit gilt und vor allem für seine umfangreiche Arbeit in der Gruppe von Muddy Waters bekannt ist, wuchs unter der Anleitung von Big Maceo Merriweather auf und beherrschte den stampfenden Barrelhouse-Pianostil, den Maceo nach Chicago brachte. Während seines tragisch kurzen Lebens war Spann Mitglied der Hausband des Chess-Labels, die nicht nur Waters unterstützte, sondern auch Howlin' Wolf, Chuck Berry, Little Walter, Junior Wells, Willie Dixon, Bo Diddley und Lowell Fulson, um nur einige zu nennen.

Otis' "Spann Is The Blues", das 1960 für das Candid-Label aufgenommen wurde, war sein Debütalbum als Bandleader und zeigt seine Stimme und sein Klavier im Duett mit dem Gitarristen Robert Lockwood, Jr. der auch auf wenigen Titeln singt.
