Doris Troy, 1937 in New York geborene Doris Payne, die Tochter eines baptistischen Predigers, sang im Kirchenchor und anschließend mit verschiedenen Gospelgruppen, später mit einem Trio, den Halos, zum Jazz. Als etablierte Songwriterin - sie schrieb Dee Clarks Hit "How About That" - wurde Doris von James Brown entdeckt, während sie als Platzanweiserin am Apollo Theatre arbeitete, und nachdem sie in einem Jay and Dee-Duo aufgenommen hatte, unterschrieb sie 1963 bei Atlantic, als der Stakkato, der "Just One Look" mischte, ein Top Ten Hit war.

Die folgenden CDs für Atlantic, Capitol und Calla waren weniger erfolgreich, und 1969 ließ sich Doris in England nieder und wurde eine erfolgreiche Session-Sängerin und Aufnahme für Apple, People und Polydor.
