Während viele der erfolgreichsten britischen Bands des Jahrzehnts (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones u.a.) ursprünglich von schwarzem amerikanischen Soul und R&B inspiriert und beeinflusst waren, könnte man behaupten, dass schwarze Künstler, die zu dieser Zeit in Großbritannien aufnahmen, nicht die Aufmerksamkeit erhielten, die sie verdient hätten.

Die ersten beiden Scheiben von "Gotta Get A Good Thing Goin" dokumentieren die Explosion des einheimischen Soul und Rhythm and Blues, die den wachsenden Erfolg von Labels wie Motown und Stax/Atlantic widerspiegeln, die die Fülle schwarzer Musik aus den USA vorantrieben. Künstler wie Carl Douglas und Jimmy James waren beliebte Live-Acts, die später in den 1970er Jahren in den Charts erfolgreich waren. Jackie Edwards, Owen Gray und Jimmy Cliff kamen aus Jamaika nach Großbritannien, nachdem sie bei Chris Blackwells Island Records unterschrieben hatten, während Geno Washington ein amerikanischer GI war, der hier blieb und bis heute auftritt. Clyde McPhatter war der legendäre Sänger von The Drifters, und aus The Chants wurde schließlich The Real Thing.

Soul und R&B sind jedoch nicht die einzigen Genres, die hier bedient werden. Während Disc 3 dem heimatlichen Ska, Rocksteady und Reggae von Künstlern gewidmet ist, die oft in der Karibik geboren wurden (allen voran Laurel Aitken, der "Godfather of Ska"), spiegelt Disc 4 ein breiteres Spektrum an Stilen wider, darunter ausgewählte Stücke vieler Stars ihrer Zeit (Cleo Laine, eine hoch angesehene Jazzsängerin; Shirley Bassey, ein weltweit erfolgreiches Phänomen; Screamin' Jay Hawkins, ein charismatischer Außenseiter; Winifred Atwell, eine beliebte Boogie-Woogie-Pianistin; Geoff Love, ein bekannter Orchesterleiter). Das Vereinigte Königreich war auch Gastgeber vieler amerikanischer Blues- und Folk-Männer und -Frauen (wie Champion Jack Dupree, Otis Spann und Mabel Hillery).

Gotta Get A Good Thing Goin" enthält zahlreiche Titel, die neu auf CD erschienen sind, und viele 45er, die heute auf dem Sammlermarkt dreistellige Summen erzielen.
